Amish Friendship Bread Recipes, Starter Shortcuts, Flavor Variations, and Baking Tips

Here I am – learning all about Amish friendship bread. It all started with “Let’s make Amish Friendship Bread and give it to our neighbors over the Holidays!” and ended with me looking at ALL the different recipe variations and shortcuts there are for Friendship Breads.

Sure, making loaves of bread to give as new neighbor gifts or as Christmas gifts to coworkers and family sounds like a GREAT idea – but I had no clue what I was getting into haha!

Turns out making Amish Friendship Bread is a multi-day process that starts with a bread “starter” that you share with your friends and then you all bake your friendship bread from some of the same starter mix. However, there ARE recipe variations with less time-requirements that bring me back into the mix (pun intended haha!)

Holiday Friendship Bread For Gifting

As I said, it all started at our Ladies Brunch when my Aunt said “Let’s make Amish Friendship Bread and give it to our neighbors over the Holidays!”

At first, I was all about it because (sorry Aunt Cheryl) my Aunt is NOT exactly known for her baking skills – so I figured this bread she was talking about was another one of her magical easy things she makes for potlucks.

I was SO wrong – this is NOT a “quick” dessert or bread recipe – it’s a PROCESS.

In fact, it’s a TEN DAY process – the majority of it is making the starter to even get ready to bake the bread.

What IS the Amish Friendship Bread Starter?

The “starter” recipe for friendship bread is:

1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk

You mix all those ingredients together – then, at the end of 10 days you will have 4 cups of “starter”.

You divide that into 1 cup starter batches that you put in a Ziploc baggies (you’ll have 4).

Then, you give 3 batches of your started away and keep one for yourself to bake.

(or, you can separate into 1 cup baggies on Day 2 and give 3 away for your friends to nurture over the next 9 days.)

Two important things to know:

1 – do not use a metal bowl or anything metal – that can mess the starter up.

2 – do NOT refrigerate your starter. Yep, this bread starter mixture (with MILK in it) sits on your counter for 10 days.

This is the basic Amish Friendship Bread recipe:

It is recommended to write those Daily Instructions ON each baggie before sharing with friends so they know what to do each day with their squishy baggie.

So THIS is what my Aunt wants us all to do.

I admit, I love the concept of it – I really do. So I’ll do it with the rest of the ladies; it’ll be a fun project we all do together with an end result that is not only delicious, but also has a little bit of love from each of us.

Now, I’d be lying if I said I did NOT look at shortcuts or recipe variations, because I totally did.

These are the resources, recipes and variations from other bloggers that I thought were super helpful:

My House Was a MESS!
And my anxiety was through the roof!

I needed a plan to get it together - it was all pushing me over the edge.

Thing is - we LIVE here... I never had the fantasy that my home would ever look "Pinterest perfect".

I simply wanted more control, less clutter and much less anxiety.

I finally found something that worked for ME.
  • My house is now easier to clean - I can now clean it in minutes, instead of hours.
  • I can now actually FIND the things I'm looking for.
  • I learned some simple decluttering systems that make me much more efficient every day - and I'm more relaxed and less overwhelmed all the time (finally)
  • My house now looks pretty darn good almost all the time.
  • Best of all - I no longer stress about guests unexpectedly showing up.
Turns out, it was so much easier to do than I ever expected.

This is how I did it.
